Major fact of this 2024 vintage: the remarkable return of several giants of the 7th art, who made the Croisette famous, including the illustrious Francis Ford Coppola, whose general delegate of the Cannes Festival, Thierry Frémaux, welcomed the came to Cannes, 50 years after “The conversation”, which earned him his first Palme d’Or in 1974: “Francis Ford Coppola is therefore back in Cannes, with this film of which almost all of you already know the title, since it is called ”Megalopolis” […] It’s The film that Francis has wanted to make for a very, very long time. And we are obviously very happy that he did us the honor of coming to present this film at Cannes. Cannes is dear to his heart. But he is dear to ours, in our hearts.”

Alongside Coppola, who will therefore covet a third Palme d’Or, American cinema is making a comeback after several years of almost absence. And a tribute will be paid to George Lucas, the creator of the ‘‘Star Wars’’ Saga, described by the President of the Cannes Festival, Iris Knobloch, as a filmmaker “who brought so many heroes into cinematic mythology that he became a myth himself.” An honorary Palme d’Or will be awarded to him for all of his work.
